The design gets the attention, but names, numbers, and logos are what make a jersey work on game day. Get these right and the whole set looks professional. Here is how to set them up.
Numbers are the most functional part of any jersey. Refs, scorekeepers, and fans need to read them at a glance. Pick a bold, clean font and give the number strong contrast against the fabric behind it. Standard placement is large on the back, with a smaller number on the front or sleeve. Keep the style simple. One or two colours read far better than a busy three colour outline that blurs at a distance.
Names usually sit in an arc across the upper back, above the number. Keep the font consistent with your numbers so the set looks unified. Watch the length of long names so they still fit cleanly. Because everything is sublimated into the fabric, adding a different name to every jersey costs nothing extra and never peels the way a pressed on name can.
The team crest is the identity of the jersey, usually on the chest. Give it enough size and contrast to stand out, and enough clear space around it so it does not fight with patterns or panels. The single most important thing is artwork quality. A clean vector logo prints crisp at any size. A small pixelated file will look rough on fabric. Sponsors and league badges can all be sublimated straight into the design. Plan their placement early so the layout stays balanced. A sponsor bar across the chest, a logo on the sleeve, or a small mark on the shorts all work. Gather the artwork for each sponsor in the best quality you can, ideally vector, so they print as sharp as your own crest.
