If you have ever ordered custom jerseys, chances are you have heard terms like Pantone, RGB, and CMYK. For most people, those terms sound technical and confusing.
But understanding them actually makes the custom jersey process much easier, especially when it comes to colors and printing expectations.
The good news is you do not need to be a designer to understand the basics. Once you know what each system does and where it is used, everything starts to make more sense.
RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue. This is the color system used by phones, computers, tablets, and TVs. RGB creates color using light.
Because screens emit light, RGB colors often appear brighter, more vibrant, and more saturated. This is why digital mockups usually look very vivid on a screen. RGB is designed for digital viewing, not physical printing.
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. This is the color system used in printing. Instead of using light like RGB, CMYK uses ink that is physically printed onto paper, fabric, promotional products, and jerseys.
Because CMYK relies on ink instead of glowing light, printed colors often appear softer, slightly darker, and more natural-looking. This is completely normal.
Pantone is a standardized color matching system. Instead of describing colors vaguely like “dark red” or “bright blue,” Pantone assigns exact codes to specific colors, for example, Pantone 186 C.
This allows designers, printers, and manufacturers to communicate colors much more consistently. Pantone is commonly used for sports teams, company branding, logos, uniforms, and promotional products.
Pantone helps reduce guesswork. If a team says “we want this exact shade of red,” Pantone gives everyone a shared reference point. That improves consistency between designs, jerseys, logos, and future reorders. Without Pantone references, colors can become much more subjective.
This is important to understand. Pantone helps significantly, but real-world printing still has limitations. Colors can still be affected by fabric material, the sublimation process, lighting conditions, texture, surrounding colors, and screen brightness.
So while Pantone improves consistency, slight differences are still normal in apparel printing. The goal is accuracy and consistency, not perfection under every lighting condition.
This is one of the biggest misunderstandings in custom printing. People often create designs in RGB because screens look brighter, colors pop more, and mockups look more exciting. But printing machines use CMYK-style processes because they work with physical ink.
That means some RGB colors cannot be reproduced exactly, especially extremely bright or neon colors. This is why colors often shift slightly when moving from screen to print.
Most custom sports jerseys today are made using sublimation printing. Sublimation works extremely well for detailed graphics, gradients, patterns, and full-color designs. But sublimation still uses CMYK-based printing systems, meaning it still follows the limitations of physical printing rather than glowing digital screens.
